Beyond the Ticket: A New Guide to Help You Navigate Concerts and Festivals with Confidence
At Accessible Festivals, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, connection, and community that live music creates. Accessibility isn’t just about getting through the gate—it’s about having the tools, information, and confidence to fully participate before, during, and after an event.
That’s why we’re excited to share Beyond the Ticket, a new accessible guidebook created by occupational therapy doctoral student Mia Soto in collaboration with Accessible Festivals.
More than a checklist, Beyond the Ticket is a practical, attendee-centered resource designed to help people with disabilities, chronic health conditions, sensory needs, and accessibility requirements prepare for successful concert and festival experiences. The guide was developed using accessibility research, real attendee experiences, survey feedback, and occupational therapy principles focused on meaningful participation and self-advocacy.
What You’ll Find Inside
Whether you’re attending your very first show or your fiftieth, this guide walks you through every stage of the experience, including:
- Choosing an accessible venue and researching accommodations
- Important questions to ask before purchasing tickets or arriving at an event
- Packing lists and preparation tips to reduce stress on concert day
- Strategies for managing sensory overload, fatigue, and physical demands
- Self-advocacy tools to help communicate your needs with confidence
- Recovery and aftercare tips to help you recharge after the music ends
- Printable checklists, practical resources, and advice from experienced concertgoers
Accessibility Looks Different for Everyone
One of the strengths of Beyond the Ticket is its recognition that accessibility extends far beyond mobility. The guide acknowledges the diverse experiences of people with physical, sensory, cognitive, neurological, and mental health conditions, offering flexible strategies that attendees can personalize for their own needs.
Rather than focusing only on barriers, the guide emphasizes empowerment. It encourages readers to understand their needs, prepare in advance, advocate for accommodations, and confidently participate in the live music experiences that matter most to them.
Created by the Community, for the Community
This guide was shaped by the voices of people with lived experience navigating accessibility at concerts and festivals. Survey participants shared the challenges they face, the accommodations that make a difference, and the advice they would give to others. Their experiences helped create a resource grounded in real-world situations rather than assumptions.
Because Everyone Deserves Live Music
At Accessible Festivals, our mission has always been to remove barriers so more people can experience the magic of live events. Beyond the Ticket is another step toward that goal—providing practical information that helps attendees feel prepared, supported, and empowered long before they arrive at the venue.
Whether you’re planning your next concert, your first festival, or helping someone else prepare for theirs, we hope this guide becomes a resource you’ll return to again and again.
